If you know me, you know I can’t pass up the opportunity to talk about superheroes – whether it be the mythos behind them, their effect on pop culture, the movies, tv shows, yada yada yada. What excited me most about the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) teaser trailer, besides there being a new trailer, was it gave me an excuse to once again use this blog as an outlet to scratch my eternal superhero itch.
Flat out, this trailer is awesome. Like any sequel for a high-budget blockbuster, the stakes are bigger, the set pieces are grander, and somehow it’s even more colorful than the original. What truly sold me on this trailer is there are literally no plot points given away at all. The trailer, much like Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), is driven by its characters and their diverse personalities. I’ve always valued clarity in character. Movies like Raging Bull (1980) or The Silence of the Lambs (1991) intrigue me more than a movie like Forrest Gump (1994) where it’s all a matter of situation. Even The Dark Knight (2008) is guilty of being more about story driving story as opposed to character driving it. The Joker’s plan only works because it’s protected by the circumstances of Christopher Nolan’s writing. If Guardians director James Gunn sticks to the original’s roots and keeps its characters and their genuineness in the forefront.
Also, just as I suspected, Baby Groot might be the most adorable thing to come out of next year. Certainly makes 2017 seems a little brighter after this rollercoaster of a year.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.
